In 2016, Google implemented a change to its search engine algorithm that favors sites with a mobile version. In 2017, Google is taking things one step further. It will soon be crawling the mobile version of your website, not the desktop version, and using that data to decide where your site should rank in the search results.

What does this mean for you you if you don't have a mobile version or you have a mobile version with different content?

First, if you don’t have a mobile version, you won’t be dropped entirely from the search engine index, but you will be penalized. Consider that over half of Google’s traffic is on a mobile device and that Google’s business goal is to provide its users with the best search experience possible. Desktop versions don’t provide a good user experience on mobile devices. They can’t be easily read or navigated, so it makes sense that Google would want to favor user-friendly mobile sites.

Second, if your mobile version has different content, you will see your ranking drop. Many salon websites still have entirely different mobile websites, and often they have far less content or pages than the desktop version. These mobile versions were a quick fix and great solutions in the past, but if they have fewer pages and thinner content than your desktop version or haven’t been SEO optimized, you stand to see your rankings drop.
